I'm Akshu, a crochet and mixed media artist based in Chennai Have you ever played house or ‘teacher teacher’ or had a fake tea party? I used to. ALL. THE. TIME. This was such a vivid part of my childhood- sitting on a koodachair at my Paati’s house and planning the production of my next skit, arranging all the dolls I have, forcing my dog bubbles to participate, dressing up with dupattas or anything that could pass off as a garment while listening to my grandmother tell her ‘masala’ added odd stories; it was a spectacular show every night. It all feels dreamlike now. Having been surrounded by such stories since I was a kid, crochet and art was something I subconsciously gravitated towards. Making things with my own hands feels like a precious way for me to escape the burdens of growing up and to keep a part of the past playfulness alive I make and share the crochet creations in this space as an ode to all my dolls that have seen all the strange and wonderful plots that unfolded at my grandmother’s house Hope you like them and much as I love making them! <3
